Old School iMac Problem

My fathers old school iMac G3 under 400 mhz crapped out on us. It was working fine until we installed panther without updating the firmware.

The computer would start up, but the monitors wouldn't display anything. He took it to Comp USA and their tech just called and said that he tried to install the firmware and the computer wouldn't take it. The computer "tech" at Comp USA claims that he thinks its a mother board and that it would cost around $400 to repair. Thats half the cost of a new eMac.

This computer is a back up on our home network so were not worried about it, but is this so called computer "tech" at Comp USA know anything about mac's?

Do any of you have a recomendation for my dad as far as what to do? Or should we just take it to a Apple store or a MAC specialist to have them repair it? Thanks

Never go to CompUSA for Mac tech advice.

Every problem is a costly logic board problem to them, because they can get away with it most of the time.

If you can, call an AppleStore and ask for the Genius Bar and ask if you should bring it in for them to look at (save yourself the trip if they say they can't fix it there). Chances are they can fix it. They are pretty good with freebie service.

Worse case they'll send it away or work on it in the back for a few days. AppleStore basically will NOT screw you for repairs like a 3rd party company like Comp USA will.

Make sure that your Ram is max'ed.

    Check http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index.html

I would try wiping the drive again and restoring from the original disk that came with the unit. If everything is up and working then do the updates and try to install panther. We have panther on a Rev A iMac so it should work on yours.
