Dead PowerBook

Hi guys,

my Pismo won't start up. I get four beeps at startup, which the knowledge base says is caused by "no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)"

I take it that this is bad, however I can't get Apple to tell me how bad. Basically they say I should go to my local Apple dealer, except my local dealer has gone out of business and there aren't any others nearby (I'm in the UK).

I asked Apple how much it would be to fix if they were to send a courier. They said that it may be the logic board needs replacing and it would be £300 just to look at it, with a replacement logic board costing extra (he wouldn't say how much).

I had the logic board replaced a couple of years ago, it cost £400!

So I'm looking at a possible £700 repair for a machine that is only worth about £400 on ebay.

What do I do? Does anyone else have experience of getting this problem fixed in the UK who might be able to tell me what the actual cost will be?
