Wrong icons in Finder?

Wow, this feels like OS 9!

All the icons on my desktop today had the wrong icon. Examples: mounted server volumes looked like Illustrator files, PDF files looked like text files, etc. It was freaky. I went to "rebuild my desktop" and, oh, wait, I cant do that anymore. LOL. Really, It felt like an OS 9 foobar! I havent used OS 9 in a LONG time. What a flashback! Any ideas on what causes this and how to fix it?

Sounds a bit invasive, no? Are messed up icons indicative of something that messed up?

It happens regularly on my computer, and I think on all OSX systems.

What I do is just rebooting the Finder. [alt-cmd-esc], choose the finder, hit the relaunch button, and a few seconds later all your icons are back to normal.

But Apple needs to adress this flaw anyhow.
