Tracking down a hardware issue

This hardware problem will almost surely cause a lock-up within 5 min of power up. My hunch so far has been that the heatsink is not making optimal contact with the CPU. So I've gone hell and highwater to ensure that every concession is made for best contact, yet the problem remains. The only thing I have left is that perhaps the heatsink clip for the ZIF style setup has "weakened" over time? So it is no longer bearing down on the heatsink with the prescribed pressure for proper operation. My question is, is this even possible for a clip to "weaken" over time, or am I just making up unlikely scenarios?

Outside of that, maybe one of the other chips on the board have gone flakey. If that is the case, is there a way to isolate, track down, or isolate the faulty device?
