iPod Selection playlist

My iTunes collection is larger than the capacity of my iPod mini. There is "iPod Selection" playlist, but the playlist does not seem to be updated automatically when I purchace new songs. Is there a way to rebuild the iPod selection playlist?

And, how are the songs chosen for the iPod Selection playlist?
