Linux installed on an External Drive

I have a question: Im planning on getting an external Firewire hard drive and i may devote it to Linux. Will the Yellow Dog Linux installer see the drive and allow me to install and boot from it? That would be great if it could because I dont wanna have to partition my hard drive.
