Disk Utility

I'm relatively new to the world of Mac OS, and it is to my understanding that disk defragmenting is not necessary.

However I have noticed that my computer has been running slower than usual, does running Disk Utility (Repair Permissions) help with that?

(Also it said that I cannot run Repair Permissions on the startup disk?)

Unless you have really large files (20MB+) defrag is not necessary, but do a search, as you do not want to start this argument!!

You can still repair the volumes you have on the drive.

As for speed of your machine you may want to look into apps called Onyx or Cocktail which will perform housekeeping on your machine (clear caches, run the maintenance scripts etc).
