In a nutshell, how do I get Gnome to run once I have installed all the gnome libs with Fink Commander?

If I recall from my Gentoo install, you need to edit your X11 config file to specify Gnome as the desktop manager, then restart X (startx in console). I think you need more than just the gnome libs, though. Gnome is a whole desktop environment, it would be like trying to run OS9 with just CarbonLib. You should be able to find help by googling "fink gnome" or "os x gnome". For that matter, gnome.org (or whatever) should have installation instructions that are more-or-less platform independent. Xdarwin.org has some instructions for setting up Gnome, too.

Or you can download Gentoo's Portage for OSX. Installing Gnome with Portage is a complex two-word process of typing "emerge gnome".
