Faster firewire would be nice, if only

things like hard drives and such had native fire wire boards and not the stop-gap firewire/ata bridges.

I hope that any new machines would have the full support of native drivers, and native mechanisms.

Don't count on it. Even with Native Firewire Drives the performance still wouldn't come close to saturating the FW bus and from a manufacturing standpoint %75 or more of the drives created are for ATA...why go through the design work for such little gain?

The only benefit to this for Apple would be if there was a mass adoption of this over ATA. That won't happen the way things are now.
