PCs don't like my Airport Base Station WEP?

I have an original ABS (graphite). When I try and make the ABS secure using a 40 bit WEP password, some PCs (Windows XP or 2K) can't connect. They can "see" my ABS access point, but cant connect. Its as if the WEP key contains illegal characters maybe? Or the PC cant deal with the password properly. I don't know. Any ideas?

    Open up Airport Admin Utility and double click on the base station. When the window comes up, click on the password icon at the top of the window. It will thell you the password to use.
