Pioneer DVR-105 or the DVR-A05?

I am looking to put a DVD-RW in my PowerMac. I was sent the following message:

--------------------------------------------------------

BTW you want the Quad Speed Pioneer DVR-A05 NOT 105. The 105 is a retail box that contains software and hardware you will never use. Only buy the raw OEM DVR-A05.

Is that right? I want to be sure the DVR-A05 is the DVD-RW to get.

My bad. I just did a search on PriceWatch.com and I told you backwards. The DVR-A05 is the IDE internal in a retail box that costs more and comes with PC software and an IDE cable that you won't need. The DVR-105 is the raw OEM of the same drive that will cost less.

Just look carefully at the PriceWatch.com descriptions and you will notice the OEM RAW drive is anywhere from $20 to $50 less expensive. It's not for sale yet though. November is when it will become available. Enjoy!

Pioneer USA finally pulled the trigger today in announcing the Quad Speed DVR-A05/105 SuperDrive which goes on sale in America November 5th for $299 list in the retail box. That means it's going to cost far less than the previous A04/104 2X speed model that is in today's Macs. The RAW OEM drive is likely to sell for no more than about $250 to begin with. This is great news for those who will simply want to replace their existing SuperDrive with the faster one. Here's the press release:

How much faster is this drive than the current superdrives in Quicksilver and Mirror Drive door Powermacs, and do you think the speed improvement is worth the cost of replacing the current one with the new one?

Anyone know if the new Pioneer drive will be supported by iDVD 2 out of the box, or do we have to wait for a software update?

10 Days until this highly anticipated $249 RAW OEM 4x SuperDrive reaches the street November 5th. I have a hunch it will work right out of the box becaue the ROM is so similar to the 104. But it's just a guess on my part.

Apple probably knows. But they won't be telling because they're still shipping the old 2x 104. They will have to support the 105 sooner than later because a lot of Mac Towers will be getting one for Christmas.

    Now let us pray. . . <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
