New Mac OS X 10.3.6 build reveals key enhancements

A forthcoming update to Apple's Mac OS X 10.3 Panther operating system nears release as the company provides documentation of its feature set.



Apple Computer this week provided developers with the third external build of Mac OS X 10.3.6 Update, a forthcoming maintenance release that will further fortify the company's Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" operating system.



Along with the build, which weighs in at approximately 34.5MB, Apple issued to developers an official list of included enhancements.



According to the computer maker, Mac OS X 10.3.6 will deliver improved file sharing for Mac (AFP), UNIX (NFS) and PC (SMB/CIFS) networks, while providing more reliable network automounts and launch of network applications.



The Panther update will also yield improved OpenGL technology and updated ATI and NVIDIA graphic drivers, additional FireWire audio and USB device compatibility, and improved compatibility for third party applications.



The release will pack updated versions of Apple's Calculator, DVD Player, Image Capture, and Safari applications, as well as previous standalone Mac OS X security updates.



Mac OS X 10.3.6 update is currently undergoing development inside Apple with the more recent build said to be Mac OS X 10.3.6 build 7R14. The company is reportedly on schedule to deliver the software update over the next 30 days.

    If it addresses the "localized string not found error" that I get so often, I'm all for it.



    But then, heck, we're only at 10.3.5 - far too early for such a tough bug to have been weeded out.

    I wonder if it will come as standard on the OS discs with my G5 iMac due very early November?

    I doubt it. All iMac G5s come with a customized 10.3.5 - I wouldn't expect that to change anytime soon (with the possible exception of orders placed via Apple's online store after the release of 10.3.6, but that isn't too likely either). I want to see the random icon corruption bug fixed (where some icons either become gibberish or completely disappear). Right now, the workaround is to log out and back in or force-quit the Finder.

    Hers's a solution that claims to fix your problem. I haven't had this problem so I haven't need to try the solution. See my signature.

    So, will there be https support for webDAV? Or is that planned for 10.4? I like Goliath but integration into the finder would be even nicer.



    Anybody in the know?

    Frankly instead of just https support, how about a WebDAV engine that actually works well. The Apple implementation crawls. Hopefully, after many releases, Apple's Finder networking implementation will finally work well. They did build this on BSD didn't they?

    fahlman, you've got to work on your file naming, buddy.



    Nope, tonton is right this is clearly a bug with vBulletin (or Safari) - that URL will NEVER display correctly.
