Voice Output in OSX?

With SimpleText in Mac OS 7 and above there was the ability to convert the text to speech. I've opened SimpleText that came with Classic but there are no voices.

If someone knows where the voices can be downloaded, it would be appreciated.

Also, is there anything similar for OSX?

First off, using SimpleText in OS X is... well... like using a stone axe to cut down a forest. Use TextEdit that came with OS X. It is the replacement.

Secondly, when you use TextEdit, look in the Edit menu, at the Speech submenu. You'll 'Start Speaking' and 'Stop Speaking'. Select the text you want to have spoken, and select the former. To choose the voice, use the Speech panel in System Preferences.

The voices are there, just not where you're expecting to see them.
