SMB Share Point Name Length Restriction?

I just noticed my OS X Macs can't "see" SMB shares with names longer than 12 characters.

Example:

I use the "Connect to Server" box to find a smb server (smb://servername). When I am prompted to authenticate, the drop-down share point list will only show share points with names shorter than 12 characters. Any share point with a name longer than 12 is "hidden".

The only way to get to a smb share with a long name from OS X is to type the full path in the "Connect to Server" box (smb://servername/share_point). This is bad for users who don't know the full path, and just want to be able to "browse" for a share point easily. I have 200 Mac users and a lot of Windows servers with long share point names (like "Corporate Design Documents" Yikes!

I thought this issue was fixed. I thought that Panther (and/orSamba 3) COULD see smb shares longer than 12 chars. Am I wrong?

What does Panther use to browse and mount smb shares? Is it a Samba client piece or is it part of BSD or is it an Apple smb client?
