that is right! IBM IS LEAVEING THE PC MARKET THAT THEY INVENTED!

The New York Times and WSJ have the story, they are putting the PC division up for sale!

What does this mean? it means sienara to the best laptops anywhere bar none (software not withstanding, the hardware was/is better than Apple powerbooks imho) - the Thinkpad. this is sad

(after thought: )

My first computer...

IBM should make a new workstation based on OpenFirmware and the POWER series of processors and call it NAM - Not A Macintosh.

Whoever buys their computer division could conceivably carry on with the same focus on quality.

This is a bit surprising though, I think everyone acknowledges IBM has been the premium business laptop brand. Sony and Apple are working different markets altogether. Does Dell have good quality in their 'serious' business laptops (Latitude)? I think Inspirons are not so hot on the quality side.

Since IBM hasn't actually made their PC product for several years - they outsource manufacturing just as Apple does, quality will depend on the new owners. Desktops were first to be outsourced as the company reduced advertising on them over a year ago.

This means nothing in regards to chip manufacturing as IBM is moving forward with all kinds of new chips and technology to sell to others as has been reported in the press the last few days.

Apple will not buy the company, or should one say "name" as whomever does is simply doing that. Dell is putting pressure on all other PC makers and as a recent article predicted, many of today's PC companies will be gone in the next few years. This may actually be good for Apple in the long run because, in fact, all PCs no matter who makes them are essentially the same. Next to get out of the PC business will probably be Gateway as they move towards consumer electronics. All very interesting. By the way, Wall Street will look at IBM selling their PC business as a good move and the stock will go up if this divestment of the PC/Laptop business happens.

In a dreamworld yes, but on earth, Dell or gayway..ehum...gateway will swallow it up...and destroy the brand...thewy should spin off the pc division into its own company... call it Baby Blue or something
