iPod partitioning

hi,

So, we all know that the iPod works both for mac and PC. But I heard that we have to partition the disk at least in two partitions, one destined to work for mac and other for PC. Why do we have to do this ? I thought it worked like a pendrive, we just had to send the files in to the iPod and the iPod software would do the rest (organizing in folders, etc), being this files readable in mac and PC all the time, no need for a specific partition to work for PC and other for mac.

Another thing, what's up with the batteries ? A friend of mine has an iPod for a couple of weaks and he can only make it last for 7 hours when it's supposed to work 12...

thanks

peace []
