Cube Video Card Size

So while I'm home for the holidays, I'm using a Cube. It's a cute machine, but this one has a Radeon in it and it is loud as all hell. I've got a Rage 128 Pro AGP card from a G4 tower back home in Boston, so without me having to do any actual work, maybe someone can aswer me this...

How long is the video card in a cube, and will a rage 128 from a g4 fit into the cube?

Do a quick search on <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com"; target="_blank">http://www.xlr8yourmac.com</a>; and you'll find some info. From what I remember, you can fit certain cards into the Cube... but you have to saw off part of the board to do so!

NOT! Several cards fit without cutting cards (which you can't do buy the way). Sawing off AGP cards is one of the most absurd false posts I have ever read in my entire life. If you saw off a card it dies because it breaks the circuits embedded in the board.

Yes. The stock Cube AGP is a 16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro with no fan and a heatsink.

If you want TwinView I have a much faster 32MB Apple OEM ATI Radeon 7500 that fits in the Cube and also runs silent without a fan for sale. You can email me at [email protected] if you are interested.

If you had bothered to actually try what I suggested, you'd see how badly you're overreacting.

I didn't say all card upgrades would require cutting. Most won't, however, one person discovered a technique for installing a Radeon 8500 into a Cube <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/cube/CUBE_8500_MODS/cube_8500_mods.html"; target="_blank">here</a>. However, and I quote:

[quote]In this article Kent Kanja shows how he moved the Cube's power supply board to allow installing the ATI Radeon 8500 card. (And had to nibble/cut a small section of the 8500 card's corner for clearance.)<hr></blockquote>

Nothing said about 'breaking circuits'. He simply had to trim some of the unused board to make it fit.

Yes, I know the original poster was talking specifically about the Rage 128. I was simply adding that even more powerful cards could be installed, with some tweaking.

No need to blow a gasket.

You know what would be funny? if you could put a GF 4 Ti in the cube....you seen those cards.....it just makes it in the door on the new Powermacs!

I think the only ones that fit are the Rage 128, Radeon, GeForce 2MX, and GeForce 3. The Rage 128 and GeForce 2MX allow for silent fanless operation, while the Radeon and GF3 both have fans. Others may fit but those are the only two I know of.

Multimedia said the Radeon 7500 fits as well. That would be pretty sweet to have a Cube with a Radeon 7500, my iBook has the Mobility 7500 and it's a great card.

If you want to try your luck fitting an 8500 in, it would be even cooler that way. The Radeon 8500 is at least as good as the GeForce 3, and quite a bit better than either of the GeForce MX cards (MX means worse <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> ). I haven't used one but I heard that it's almost as good as the GeForce 4 Ti.

My apologies for overreacting to the cutting suggestion.

Moving the DC/DC card is not trivial, the 8500 requires a fan on the processor which will eventually fail and is noisy, and yes the Radeon 7500 Apple OEM 32MB TwinView fits easily and runs silent with a very modest heat sink no problem.

I have them for sale. Anyone want one? Make me an offer I can't refuse.

Does anyone know if the newly released ATi Radeon 9000 Mac Edition fits inside a cube? It seems to be quite short and doesn't have a fan.

I used to have the same problem with my radeon, so here's what I did. I removed the fan from the card and replaced it with a passive heatsink. This was done some 18 months ago, and not a single problem since then. No heat increase, nothing! Works flawlessly, and I have my Cube on 24/7!
