iBook

hey. i was wondering when there will be an iBook update and what will be included. im anticipating new iBooks between march-june during the time tiger is said to be released. what i really want is a 1.5 Ghz G4 14 inch with superdrive and full tiger support. do you think it will happen in the near future? what about BOT vram and better GPU?i did the calculations of the product cycle and if the iBook is in a normal cycle than it should be released within about two months or so. ive finally made a decision on the iBook to replace my G3 iBook but i went through powerbook to iBook to iMac to Mac mini to iBook again, finally arriving at my final decision.its amazing what staring at the product pages at the apple store can do to a person. any specs will be appreciated.

yeah, ibooks were updated just a few months ago, so it maybe as long as june before the next update. I guess basically i'm saying, yeah, you're probably right.

More likely than not, the upgrade you're waiting for won't happen until September/October...effectively the timeline for the entry of the 7448 into the Powerbook range (if Apple and IBM can't cobble together a 970 variant to go into the Pro range).

Perhaps you'll see the migration of the current PB vid cards to ATI MR 9600s or at the very least Nvidia Go 5200s...maybe 5400RPM drives as standard.

I reckon you right...I would touch the mini or the iMac until the bugs are ironed out on Rev. B.

Thought about the forthcoming PB revision...it might be worth waiting for at least 6 days for the 12" version. It would have the stuff that you want now...and what could be better than having that hot little puppy in your sweaty little hands

what an interesting thought...well i definitely can only afford a 12 inch PB right now, and i thought that may be a secondary option. for me personally, on my laptop i use mainly iLife, web, mail, word processing, light gaming(THE SIMS 2), and maybe a little Photoshop and Illustrator if i get a Powerbook. will Photoshop and Illustrator run smoothly with an iBook if i maxed out the ram? i know that there are obvious benefits between the pro line against the iBook, but in the next rev can i expect to see a wide gap made between the iBook and PB? because right now, for a student like me it seems that the next iBook rev might suit me, even though im beginning to see things in silver instead of ice white...

also...what's with Tiger? is it fully supported in the next rev Powerbooks?

There currently is almost no difference betwen the iBook and the 12" powerbook. I have a 1Ghz 12" iBook with 1GB of RAM and photoshop runs fine for what I do (nothing fancy).

The main benefit of the powerbooks is they do video spanning, but you can hack the iBook to do this.

If they bump the PowerBooks on Tuesday then it might be worth it to pay the extra $400 for the 12" (especially if the reduce the prices). I would still prefer the iBook for its sturdy design though.

12" Powerbook it is then... thanx for all the help... ill be going to my friendly apple store later to scope out the situation with the mini and shuffle... it always fun to bother hard working retailers with questions when u dont plan on even buying the product. they like that i'm sure.

Careful about that trip to the Apple Store - if you hold a Mac mini you might just fall in love with it. I wouldn't be too worried about the rev a status on the mini as it is holding components that have been well tested in different forms.

well considering im in love with portables and after pricing it with monitors and such and nearly fainted i think i can control my attraction to apple products...a 2.5 Ghz G5 with two 30 inch screens would probably knock me unconcious or fry every good brain cell in my head...but the likelihood of me seeing any of those anytime soon, is well unlikely...

I have a gut feeling that we will see the iBooks price cut this Tue, alongside updated PBs.

look for the low end model to hit 899..just a hunch, a gut feeling, it makes no sence, but I just have a feeling...

Tiger is fully supported in the current rev of Powerbooks. All across the line. That includes CoreImage and CoreVideo (if that is what you were wondering)

I am debating on ordering a 12" iBook this morning. If the price drops tomorrow, then I am in for sure! I just need a portable computer to take with me on vacations and do simple work on. Something small and portable.

I use Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS on my 600MHz iMac G3, they are reasonable ok - pretty slow, the current iBooks are absolutely fine for general use.
