Yes, it works just fine--after a reboot. Very odd.
The USB keyboard I plug into my iBook behaves the same way sometime. I read in another situation that the trackpad on this new powerbook has gone to some sort of an internal USB connection. I wonder if the PBook's keyboard is also connected through USB and it is a flaw in the OS to not recognize USB devices occasionally on wake.

I noticed this about the 10.3.8 update:
"Addresses an issue in which a PowerBook G4 computer would, on rare occasion, wake from sleep with a black screen and not respond to any keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input."
Ah ha!!! related--yes, the same problem, maybe not.
