This morning when I woke up my BRAND NEW powerbook, the keyboard didn't work, although the trackpad did! Wow--something to worry about???

But did it work again later?

Yes, it works just fine--after a reboot. Very odd.

The USB keyboard I plug into my iBook behaves the same way sometime. I read in another situation that the trackpad on this new powerbook has gone to some sort of an internal USB connection. I wonder if the PBook's keyboard is also connected through USB and it is a flaw in the OS to not recognize USB devices occasionally on wake.

    my little theory for now...

Trying to keep my little post alive, hoping to hear from someone with some insight...

I noticed this about the 10.3.8 update:

"Addresses an issue in which a PowerBook G4 computer would, on rare occasion, wake from sleep with a black screen and not respond to any keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input."

Ah ha!!! related--yes, the same problem, maybe not.
