Missed Oppurtunity with lowend PowerMac G4
I am pleasantly surprised by today's announcements. especially the 23 inch price drop...wow.
but i cant help but be dissapointed in the lowend tower.
1499 is a great price point but it needs something more to sell.
could be many things but the two things that stand out are
1. 2nd processor
2. Superdrive
i would assume both cost nearly the same for apple. i would much prefer to see the superdrive than the 2nd processor and i think it would be an accepted trade off for most. iLife is great, and every pro product should be able to use every one of its apps. let the cheap consumer products make sacrifices that prevent them from using an app like iDVD 3.
Apple dissapointingly went single processor on it but to make things worse they made the clockspeed lower than the dual machines. Had Apple chose a 1.25 Ghz or even 1.42 Ghz single processor and put it on a 167Mhz bus even without the 2nd processor and superdrive i think the lowend could have been one of the most appealing apple professional switcher machines in recent times.

if this is what they are gonna give us i do think it wshould be a bit cheaper.... 1399 or 1299..... at least 1299 you can technically get a tower and an apple lcd for under 2000... which would be extremely nice

To stay on topic however, Applenut, you hit the nail on the head. A very unsatisfactory lowend powermac. Oh well, 't is the year of the powerbooks, but still, this actually makes clear exactly why.
The display prices are much, much better. But why cancel a 15 inch model? They sell very well and $700 is still a lot of money for a display. They could have a 15 inch for $400 at most. Apple needs to stop holding itself back from increasing market share. Its very frustrating. .............................................

Yea and that limits market share/install base. Something Apple needs more than anything IMO.
But, once you go dualies, you should not go back.

The new 1Ghz PowerMac w/ 17" LCD display will run you $2200.
The current 17" iMac 800 is $1999 but with a superdrive. A new iMac bumped to 867 and 1GHz priced $1700 and $2000 respectively may bode well for the low end tower. The additional $200 may be justified by expandability and bus speed.
But if a 1GHz iMac is any less (perhaps $1800), why would anyone really go for the tower?

This does not include any PCI slots but with the throughput of Firewire 800, why would you need it?

Despite becoming America's number one PC manufactor on the belief that PCs should be free, Apple burned through to much cash to quickly.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, "We tried updating Mac OS X every month [charging customer 129 each upgrade] and releasing a new version of iLife weekly, but it just wasn't enough. I guess the free PC thing just doesn't work."
In other news, Gateway Computer Corps. announced today that they would begin paying people to buy a PC from them.
