Are new PowerMacs quieter?

in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
I saw a few posts that mentioned that the new powerMacs are quieter than the previous dual processor vacuum cleaners. Is this true for sure? I would be interested in getting the single processor 1 Ghz PM, but only when the next model comes out and it drops to a more reasonable price. $1500 is no bargain, Apple. Get with the program!..............................

    From today's Maccentral.com

    <a href="http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0301/28.apple.php"; target="_blank">http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0301/28.apple.php</A>;

[quote]The noise level was one of the biggest complaints many customers had with the previous generation Power Macs. According to Apple, this problem has been fixed and customers will be happy with the results of the work put into correcting this issue.

"We worked really hard and went over the systems to find every possible way to make the system quieter," said Tom Boger, Director, Power Mac Product Marketing. "I'm happy to tell you that we've done that -- when the systems get out in the marketplace, I'm sure our customers are going to be delighted at how quiet these systems are."

"They are significantly quieter -- these will answer the critics," added Joswiak.<hr></blockquote>

Unless the critic is someone who plunked down a few grand last month and is stuck with a loud machine. :/

I can't wait to hear a new one... was a major complaint of my dual GHz MDD tower. I had to put it to sleep in my office or it bothered the hell out of us down the hall at the kitchen table.

Excellent! Thanks guys. Now I know what my next machine will be-the single processor model, in a few months after new models come out and the price drops down to an earthly level. Just think how many sales Apple loses by not pricing them right..........................

I guess I am one of the lucky ones.

Both my 1 and 1.25 MDDs seem to to be as quit as my HP C3700 or ULTRA 5 in normal fan mode.

They do occasionally go into turbo mode, but only for a very short time and only a few times a day.

Hm, my MDD goes into turbo mode once a month maybe. It's quiet, but the problem is not sound pressure, but frequency... the frequencies are the ones that annoy the hell out of us. My roommate's MDD is significantly louder as he has two hard drives in; his blower is probably at 40% max (mine is like 10%, just guessing).

Guys, anyone out there seen or bought a new MDD yet?

Can you tell us how much the noise improvement on them is?

I'm desperate to buy one but not before I know for sure they are quieter.... hopefully substantially quieter....

Well, I tried to listen to one at the Houston Apple Store but was kind of hard to tell.

Stores aren't the best to test something like that.

    Didn't sound loud to me though. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I think I'm heading over to the mall in a little while. I'll stop by the Apple Store and I'll check.

I first set up a new Power Mac monday, and I didn't notice any difference in noise. But then, I didn't mind the noise of the older Power Macs.

Sounds (pun intended) like I should just get a processor upgrade for my 450 rather than have to use it from the next room.

I'd like read some informed opinions concerning the new Powermacs... are they quieter?

I used one at MicroCenter, and, sure, there still was a fan, but it really wasn't as bad as the last model...

Thanks for your input. I stopped in at CompUSA and I could definitely hear a fan. But its so noisy in that store, that I reckon it would sound completely different in my quiet home environment.

Despite the fact that my iMac is fanless, the whine of the hard drive keeps it from being "silent". I have read a lot of complaints about how noisy the MDD units are - and I don't want to upgrade to something that's louder.
