Anders hit the jackpot!

The company I work for have been bought by one of our competitors a year ago. The two companies are about to be merged and due to the synergy effects one out of four have been laid off.

Despite that I work full time I am a student (sociology at the university) and was going to hand in my notice of resignation next january to focus on the last exams and my final extended essay.

As a part of the massive lay-off it was agreed that those who wanted it could suggest themselves as candidates and of course I volunteered since the work I do has nothing to do with my future. I didn´t think it would be accepted since the work I do is quite central for the company to continue. But luckily for me they accepted to let me go at the end of July.

Here is the jackpot. I am laid off at the end of July. When the company lay off people at my level they have to do it with three month notice. But those month are not counted from today but from the end of July! So I am paid August, September and October despite not working. And on top of that I am paid three month pay as a farewell bonus. My five weeks of paid holiday for 2004 and four weeks for 2005 is placed on an account I can use for future holidays and finally our yearly bonus for 2005 is calculated for the first ten month of this year despite I only work the first seven! I am given $2700 for an outplacement agency to help me find another job (but its flexible enough for to use it as a general career counseling since I won´t need a new job)

The bottom line is that because I "save" one of my colleagues from being fired I am paid what I would have made from working August until and including January where I would have quit the job anyway. Well above $25000.

I feel so grown up not just being laid off with nothing but a "I am sorry" and "have a nice day" Of course its difficult to be happy while lots of my 40+ colleagues are laid of who many will have difficulties finding new jobs. But for me this is the best thing that has happen to me in my work life

Congratulations, Anders. Any thoughts on what to do with the bounty?

    Thanks.

Yeah. I could go find another job but I will use it to try to get a internship as research assistance at the department of Justice. I don´t have to worry how to pay for the bills for half a year so I might as well use it for something that will help me earn a lot of experience in my field of study (the juridical systems role in the society and its relations to other systems (and try to use Luhmanns theories as a critical theory with his theory of the legal system as an example as a side kick for those who know what I am talking about)).

Congratulations Anders. A windfall is never a bad thing. Don't forget taxes though, if they're not already taken out.

When I left my last job I had to pray that my name wasn't slandered. Last month my W2 was suspiciously mailed to the wrong address and I had to use connections to ensure I got it promptly. But not all my experiences have been like this.
