CRT iMac Hard Drive Upgrade

I know I can replace the HD in my iMac, what I want to know is if a particular drive would be suitable. I only ask because I don't want something my iMac can't keep cool. It's the 333mhz model.

The model in question is <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11177342&m=488&cat=511&scat=512#detai ls" target="_blank">here.</a>

Lets see. The iMac dosn't have a fan. I've herd that 7200 RPM drives sometimes burn up in iMacs, bit then you could install a little fan to keep the drive cool. Best bet is to use 5600 RPM drives. (Slower, quieter and cooler)

it has a fan...iam on this machine (yes..the 333mhz model) for almost 4 years now.

    ok...i have a 100gig ibm drive in it...7200rpm...ata 100..though it runs only at 66

well...i guess if u stay under 120gigs..i heard thats the maximum supported...or err...anything like that...yah

    so any disk will fit

    have fun

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it has a fan. I think they got rid of the fan in later models.

Yep. The fan on my dad's is so loud. The 333 was the last iMac with a fan.

    Shouldn't be a problem.

I'm using a WD 120GB 8MB cache 7200RPM drive on my iMac 333. Just be sure to partition it for OS X.

Wow: Kenneth, EmAn('s dad), and cycle... and I thought I was the only one with a 333 still.

    Only one with a 333 ????

I've got a 266 here ... unmodified and running like a champ on Jag.

We'll see what happens this week ... if none of the purported updates pique my interest, I may have to try upgrading the HD in it !!!

Am I to understand that any ATA66 (or better) drive should work ? ...as long as it fits in the alloted space.

If I go that route, I think I'd have to swap the CD for a CDRW as well .... a saw one advertised once to slip into a tray loading iMac.

I still have two 333 Rev.B iMacs going strong at work, one Tangerine and one Aqua. You can put any drive in them but I strongly recommend a 5400Rpm and not a hot WD or Seagate 7200 ATA100 cos they roast the inside real fast!! ALSO dont forget the infamous iMac 8gb limit, when you partition the drive you must install all your OS on a partition entirely within the first 8 Gb of the disk otherwise they wont boot. Trust me I know!! My tangerine 333Mhz has a 40Gb Seagate and 512Ram and runs Jaguar just fine (maybe a little slowly)!! But I love it, may it never die

I put a larger drive in my 266. I can remember what RPM it is? I wouldn't worry about it. The fan gets a good wind tunnel effect in the iMac.

Finally got a 120GB WD to boot 9.1 on my iMac 233 Rev. A - I had to set the jumpers to "single or master", no other configuration would be accepted. Don't know about the 333 though.
