If i run backup and it does, among other things, my address book contacts, and then i run isync and do address book contents, is the idisk smart enought to recognize redundant information? Or am i backing up the same thing twice?

i would assume that they're separate. iSync basically is a backup on the iDisk, as well as being an editable version online. It's probably best to do what you're doing, An iSync isn't a backup, you could accidentally erase your addresses on your computer using iSync would erase the ones online as well - unless you used the restore option.
Contacts don't use more than a few meg so it's probably better to do an iSync and a backup just to be safe.
