External Sound Cards

Hi, Im looking for a good external sound card for use with my 12" powerbook. I'll be hooking it up to Logitech Z5500 speakers. I have had a look at the M-Audio Sonica but im not sure about this whole digital coax/optical thing. Is there much difference? At the moment Im only familiar with the optical method which the Sonica does not have. Can anyone recommend any other good sound cards? Thanks
