Wireless network creates odd behaviour

Hi all,

I recently moved house and decided that in the new place I'd set up a wireless network to prevent the horrible cable mess I had in the old place. My x86 based laptop already has a wireless card and I bought and installed an airport extreme card for my G5 iMac. The wireless access point I'm using is an old graphite airport. The ADSL for my new place hasn't been activated yet so I've just been using the network to transfer files to and from the laptop via scp and sftp.

I get some really odd behaviour on the iMac, logging in takes ages - the dock and my wallpaper load quickly but the top menubar takes ages to appear, as does iCal which I have set up to load everytime I log in. Additionally when I launch help it just seems to hang and I have to force quit.

Switching off the airport cures this behaviour.

Is this behaviour just due to the fact that the OS cannot connect to the internet (does help try to contact a server)? Or should I be worried about something more sinister?
