Mail.app freezing woes

Well I've gone and done it....after several years of being the only person I know who hasn't had Apple Mail.app crap out on me, I've finally managed to break it. I attempted to send a friend a 250MB file...upon attaching it the program froze. Now, when I launch the app, it hangs on "configuring mail headers" and there's no response when I try to delete the troublesome email from the outbox...I get the beachball when I try to do anything, then the program "unexpectedly" quits. This is the 10.3 version of the program. Can anyone help me make Mail useable again?

    Have you tried rebooting?

i got it!! for those of you wondering, if you ever get something stuck in your outbox that freezes mail.app, just go into the library folder in the home directory, find the mail folder, and trash the "outbox.mbox" viola, mail restored!
