I know the new mail interface is contentious... but i wonder if a combination of its interface and the new unified look might replace the (even yuckier?) metal look...

Personaly, I think the mail look is nice, but kinda akward. I dont think Apple will be replacing metal anytime soon in the finder or iLife apps either.
The "Platinum" look doesn't suit the Safari atmosphere - because you only really have one window (tabs instead - why is this still turned off by default?) I think Safari looks cool, i like the spotlight look which is the same as mail - the buttons in mail need work though.
