Emoticons for Mail?

My wife is use to Windows and MS products. One of the things we like is that in any MS product such as Outlook, you can use emoticon symbols and the smiley appears onscreen. Mac mail does not seem to be able to do that and my wife sends a lot of whimsical emails. Is there a program or utility that allows one to use emoticons in Mail just as in iChat?
