When will we get final Eudora for OS X

I've been using Eudora for many years. Since March, I've been using various betas of Eudora for OS X, most recently 5.1b16. It has been running very well and fulfills all of my needs, but it was released almost six months ago.



Now that 10.1 is out, isn't it about time that Qualcomm shipped a final version of Eudora for OS X?



I wonder whether Qualcomm is waiting for MWSF to ship a major final upgrade, e.g. Eudora 5.5 or 6 for OS X. That may be the reason why those of us on OS X have been using beta software since March 24.



I'm intersted in hearing any thoughts or information about a release date for final.

Eudora seem to be one of those companies whose products are in a continual stage of flux, and final releases come and go just as quickly as betas.



It does concern me a little that there are currently no mail apps for OS X that I'm entirely happy with. I'd come to love Outlook Express 5 for OS 9, and even though I'd like to stay loyal and use Mail (It's Apple, it's Cocoa, and it's very neat and tidy), it's just not powerful enough.



I've tried Mail, Eudora, Entourage, and Mulberry, and though I can find things to like about all of them, I'm not entirely happy.



I have great hopes for future versions of Mail, I just hope I'm not let down.

I'm waiting for the Office X suite especially tor EntourageX. The Mail.app that I'm using now is crap. Perhaps I should give the Eudora ßeta a shot.

I haven't yet moved to OS X and am currently using Eudora. If I decide to scrap Eudora and move to Mail.app is there any way for Mail to import my Eudora folders? If not I don't think there is any way I would leave Eudora.



Also, Belle, you mentioned that Mail wasn't powerful enough for you. What features do you find most lacking?

How can I get my hands on the Eudora Beta for OS X? I've been using Eudora Pro for years, and I love it.

I just tried this beta today (search for it on versiontracker.com if you want it) and it sucks nuts. The interface is ass-ugly and it keeps crashing over and over. This isn't a beta, it's a rough draft that should be scrapped. I use Eudora on my PC at work, and the OSX beta of Eudora is about six years behind the Windows version.

I e-mailed Qualcomm last week and got the following response this Tuesday, Dec. 4:

From the wording it sounds like the response from a customer representative who doesn't have access to detailed development information. But as I've said before, Eudora 5.1b16 had been working flawlessly on my system.

Tardy reply here, but yes...OS X 10.1 Mail imported all my Eudora folders painlessly.

Thanks yablaka, I look forward to having my first proper drive of OS X in a couple of weeks and if Mail looks ok I may stick with that as my email needs are hardly of the power-user sort.



I can do without the silly "Mood Watch" and the ads that sit at the right of my screen. I even tend to do my own spell checking as I have learned from past mistakes not to fully trust a spell checker that doesn't have the forethought to know what word was intended.



But I have been a loyal Eudora user for 5 or 6 years and if I can see enough reason to stick with it then I may. I particularly don't like to hear that it looks "ass-ugly". <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

actually it is rock-solid for me (one crash in three month) and the interface is not worse than the classic-version (but not exactly beautiful either).



I have switched fulltime to it. And if you pay some bucks, you don't have to stare at ads either.

Rejoyce! Qualcomm just posted <a href="http://www.eudora.com/betas/"; target="_blank">Eudora for OS X 5.1b18</a>. There are visible improvements to the buttons, checkboxes and other interface elements. Don't know what improved under the hood.



<a href="http://www.macminute.com/"; target="_blank">MacMinute</a> is reporting that a "a final version is expected to ship during the first-half of 2002." I can't wait.

I guess that's one thing I'd have liked to see at MWSF - a new version of Mail. It would be nice to see the app put on a separate revision path from OS X.

That would indeed make sense. After all, iTunes and iMovie have their own schedules too. A separate schedule would also fit in well with Apple's intention of updating when updates are ready instead of waiting for the big shows.



So far, I have noticed one problem with Eudora for X 5.1b18. Copy doesn't work! Regardless of what I copy in Eudora, "P10273-ND" is added to the clipboard and inserted when I paste. What is up with that? That's a major and very strange bug that will hopefully be fixed soon.

With the recent version of Eudora beta constantly locks up my machine and the 'madantory' force restart I now switch to Mail

I've done some more testing with Eudora 5.1b18, and it has some serious stability problems. Unlike for Leonis, Eudora hasn't brought down my system (yet), but the crashes are seriously annoying.



I heard somewhere that Qualcomm didn't have any Mac programmers on staff for several months, which is why we didn't see any updates. This would explain the lack of progress from 5.1b16 in June 2001 to 5.1b18 in January 2002. I just hope Qualcomm gets its Eudora-act together because I have absolutely no desire to switch to any other (less powerful) e-mail app.

It looks like Qualcomm has hired a new Mac programmer. At last the new betas are flying out the door. They just released <a href="http://www.eudora.com/betas/"; target="_blank">5.1b20</a>.



They brought back the old Eudora icon, just now that I had gotten used to the new one!



By the way, it seems that my stability problems reported above were not related to Eudora. Copy, paste and dragging text worked find after a restart and I haven't been able to reproduce the problem since. Yay!

I was really eager to see a decent OSX version of Eudora, since I've been on Eudora Pro on all my Windows machines for many years, but after installing Office X with Entourage, I'm pretty happy with that.

The new icon (with two antialiased letters) is better than the "old" new icon (antialiased post office with letter and US flag). However, the old Eudora icon (one letter with hand and pen, non-antialiased) is still my favorite.



I guess new icons are part of progress. Whiners like me who prefer the old and traditional icons can always cut and paste them onto the new apps.
