Mic Imput Probs On My PowerBook G4

I've got a PowerBook G4 and it looks like I have an audio (mic) imput just to the rear of the headphone jack on the left side of the computer. Is this, in fact, a mic jack? I just purchased a headset with two mini headphone jacks. One for mic, one for headphones.

I've gone to system prefs, sound and switched to Line In - Audio Line-In Port.

As soon as I switch to the Line-In Port the Input Level meter "lights" go off, indicating the the mic is not working. Additionally, I've set the prefs for Skype to accept Line-in Mic, not the built in mic but still, it doesn't work. People can only hear me through my internal mic...and that sucks.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help.

It is a line in but it requires a line level device. The signal needs to be around 8 dBu. So you'll need an amplified or self-powered mic. To use a mic level device, you'll need a preamp or something like Griffin's iMic. Or go usb but prolly still a good idea to check the manufacturers specifications.
