Hey everyone,

a friend and i are both on macs.

i want to know if anyone knows of a simple way for he and i to transfer files with each other from the comfort of our own rooms (and houses)?

i don't think it's FTP im after, but im not sure.

im sure there is some way we can do this, perhaps even through the OS?

or through a third-party app?

anyway, any thoughts then let me know.

Thank you

I think skype can do a direct file transfer. You can also use something like LimeWire and just go right for the file.

    1) Mail - drag and drop the file to each other

    2) iChat - ditto

    3) If you have static IPs, you can just use AFP via the Finder's Connect To Server and prepend the IP with afp:// Be sure to unmount when done.

    4) Turn on Personal Web Sharing in the Sharing panel of Preferences and then toss the files in your personal Sites folder on each machine. Access via a web browser.

    All sorts of options.

hmmm, personal web sharing seems to work.

My pal isn't at home right now, so im testing it myself.

Downloading a file is VERY slow. A mere 0.7kbps. it is getting slightly quicker (was 0.4kbps), but is there some way i can direct more of my upload towards the personal website, and so that it downloads quicker for him??

    thanks

I highly recommend a FREE service:

Easy, secure, multi-point transfers up to 1GB at a time.

Sounds like a network throttling issue, so it won't matter what method you use, it'll be slow. \

Apache (the web server) will grab whatever bandwidth it needs out of what is available. Run Activity Monitor (in your /Applications/Utilities folder) to see how much bandwidth is being used - if it is below 100%, then there's simple a network throttledown somewhere along the way.

Also, be aware that most consumer broadband pipes are asymmetrical, where you get a *lot* more download speed than upload. You're always going to be limited by that upload limit.

thinking about my slow upload issue, i've had another idea.

Does anyone know of a website that acts like a server to place files? a free service with 250MB of space? similar to ImageRage which is a website for uploading images to the net so that you can link auctions and forums to them. It doesn't even require any kind of membership.

That way i could simply upload my files (which would take me an age) and then he could download them from the site at normal speed.

    Thanks

i read it quickly and didn't see anything really harmful. It says they own everything except what you upload.

Care to shed some light on what you mean
