Why is iDisk so slow??

I don't know if this belongs in Software Discussion, but why is iDisk so slow. I'm on cable here at work and it is as painfully slow to update as at home on 56k. Homepage via the web is OK, but opening an iDisk in the finder and copying something to it is excrutiating!



I thought they fixed iDisk recently... webDav or something. I have no idea what that is, but it must suck <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    I was having the same "slowness" on our ADSL the other day. I thought it should be faster on a high-bandwidth connection.

    It's incredibly fast for me on T1 on an 867 MHz G4 in OS 9, but in OS X on an iBook on the same connection it freezes the whole Finder for minutes before mounting. Same for opening folders.

    I rarely use iDisk anymore because it's so slow with Cable on my iBook.

    Agreed. iDisk is unusably slow on DSL also.

    Do you all connect using Go--iDisk? I connect using Connect to Server afp://idisk.mac.com It doesn't seem to slow on a 56K, although I'm used to slow downloads having dialup.

    There's nothing wrong with WebDAV itself. WebDAV rawks.



    Apple's implementation in OS X, on the other hand, seems to need a good dose of Geritol.



    It's not all that bad on my cable modem, though. It's not fast, but the iDisk and the directories within pop up within a few seconds.

    Whenever I use it I connect from Apple's site.

    it sucks. sucks anyway you try to connect.



    OS 9 is faster but not by much.



    From what I hear it flies on Windows XP and 2000

    Has anyone worked out how to access their iDisk using ftp. I use Interarchy to mount other "ftp disks" and they are great.



    Interarchy mounts the ftp directory in a finder window (like iDisk) and you treat the disk like any other. When you're finished making changes, you click synchronise, and Interarchy makes changes to the remote ftp directory to match the local mounted version. It's absolutely brilliant, and I'd like to use iDisk this way.



    So... does anyone know how to connect via ftp? I've tried

    server: homepage.mac.com

    path: username

    user: username

    password: ????????



    All I get are errors. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    Yea it also is good on my brother's Gateway 500 MHz Celeron with 96 MBs, and is crap on my 7300/180 with 32 MBS of RAM. Oh well sometimes we just can't win.

    OK. So I did a little research on this iDisk thing. On Apple's web site, they say that FTP is not supported, but AFP and WebDAV are.



    Now as I see it (I may be wrong) when you connect to iDisk via the finder toolbar, you're connecting via WebDAV. When I do this, iDisk just plain sucks. So I tried connecting via the Finder &gt; Go &gt; Connect to server and entering



    afp://idisk.mac.com/myusername



    Well this speeds things up considerably. I did a couple of tests with a small 56k file. Via WebDAV, the file took 35sec to upload (from when the copy progress window opened to when it closed). When I connected via AFP the same file took 10 seconds. A speed up of 350% I tried this twice after disconnecting and reconnecting.



    Needless to say, my iDisk icon is gone from the Finder toolbar.

    I just connected to my idisk through Win2K and it is SMOKIN' FAST!



    Here's the scary part:

    I connected in Virtual PC on OSX!



    That is just sad

    Easy: Because both Appleshare over IP (OS9) & WebDev (the version in OSX anyway) suck balls.

    You only have to type it once. Servers you have connected to in the past are available in the pull down menu from the Go command window. You could also make an alias once you have connected the first time.



    I agree with the others that using the Go command is faster. Also, I have seen iDisk speed up with OS 10 upgrades. It will be interesting to see if it changes with 10.1.3 which is due out soon.

    Try to connect to your iDisk with "Goliath" from Versiontracker.



    Then weep at how crappy Apple's iDisk implementation is.

    How does it work? What address do I have to insert? It automatically places http in front of afp. I tried homepage.mac.com/username but didnt work.
