How do I play avi & mpg video files on Tiger?

I download several video clips a week in wmv, rp, or mpeg and I have no problem playing them under Tiger. When I download either avi or mpg, it tells me it doesn't know what application these files are associated with in order to play them. I have looked on versiontracker, but I don't even know what I am looking for, so I need some help.

Thanks in advance.

Quicktime with the appropriate plugin will play most common video formats.

Yeah, bergz is right. I've been using MPlayer OSX since early Panther. It's been very good at playing .avi and other annoying formats that aren't natively supported by QuickTime. The version of MPlayer I'm using now on 10.4.2 was the same one I was using on 10.3.9, so you shouldn't have any trouble with it on Tiger now. VLC works as well, I've just never been a fan of it, bu tthey're both free so you can always test drive them yourself. Good luck
