SSL question

In Apples mail preferences there is a box to check to use SSL--do I want to check that--what does it mean?

    Check with your ISP to see if they support it. Then, it is up to you as to use it or not. I chose not to just becuase when i am forced to dial-in when not at home, my dial-up ISP blocks the ports needed for SSL over IMAP
