i would like to back up dvd's through my i book cd-writer. i want to know if they already have programs out there for macs to download and burn dvd's through a CD/WR. if not, i know PC's have programs that can do it and would it be plausable to use virtual PC to perform such a task?

1.) no CDRW drive can burn a DVD. PC or Mac. it's impossible. completely different standards/formats

2.) you may be thinking of VCDs which are Video CDs. They use MPEG 1 video at a low resolution and then play back on most dvd players although quality ain't that great. Roxio Toast 5 burns VCDs very easily on a CDRW drive

    jonathan,

as applenut said, you can't burn DVDs using a CD burner on any platform. Nor will you ever be able to in this universe. A DVD holds 10's of times more data than a CD and they are completely different physically. Even if you had a DVD burner, you couldn't copy a DVD onto a blank CD. There just isn't enough room. The programs you're talking about are a complete sham. What they probably do is rip the DVD movie into VCD (MPEG 1) format. Again, as applenut said, a much lower quality (and less space consuming) format. Then the resulting data is burned to the CD. It might look like it's working, but it's a scam. Be wary of anyone who claims that you can do it. They just want your money.

although both of the previous posts are correct (for the most part), i'll try to give you some useful info...

what you're thinking of is a format called DivX. it's a fairly good (and ever-improving) codec to turn huge MPEG video files into more managable ones. (it also handles the audio associated with the movies). Basically, the codec loses some quality of video, but most of the compression comes from the degradation of audio. the dolby digital 5.1 audio common on DVD's is more space consuming than the video itself. so, one of the ways to strip the total size down is to down-mix the audio to stereo. one of the main reasons DivX has caught on is because its highly flexible. you can use it to copy DVD's to your HD with nearly no loss of quality, or choose to strip the movie down to the point where it will fit on a CD. also, the software (for the most part) is open source and/or freeware.

and yes, there are mac os compatible versions. i'd recommend checking out <a href="http://www.divx.com"; target="_blank">DivX.com</a> and <a href="http://mac.divx.st"; target="_blank">Mac DivX</a> for more info and links to cool downloads.

    Hope this helps!

No I think you are all wrong. It is possible to burn "DVD" onto CD's. They only last about 10 minutes but they are very good and cheap. I have only seen hardware machines that can do this and I am dissapointed that iDVD doesn't allow it.

Essentially you are burning MPEG2 onto a CD but with all the other things as well so the DVD palyer will reconlise the disks content and treat it as a DVD even though it has been recorded onto a CDR.

    My DVD player plays VCDs.

But, you still can't burn a DVD with a CD-RW burner. Different lasers, materials, etc.

Well it can be done they are calling it cdDVD.

    Look here <a href="http://www.megavizyon.com/vdr3000.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.megavizyon.com/vdr3000.htm</a>;

You only get 18 minutes on a CD but that should be long enough to bore the relatives!

    Now where are those flints!!!!!

You can do that with iMovie, Toast, and a CD Burner already.

No you can't you can only burn VCD's they are MPEG1.

This machine will burn MPEG2 and give you the navigation screens etc. You need a programme like iDVD to produce that and iDVD will not export/burn to CD's even if the disk is less than 650MB.

You cannot do this with iMovie as it does not encode into MPEG2

I'm talking a REAL DVD, full video, audio (dolby digital 5.1 surround sound), 3-5 hours of video with added featurettes etc. Not some dumb cdDVD 18 min crap.

When I say burn a DVD on a CD-R/RW drive I'm talking the REAL DEAL... i.e. SuperDrive

Can't be done, my nuts are staying here.

good stuff guys, i knew there were some pirates out there in the mac world. i wasn't specific enough with my original question but my question was mainly about being able to burn a dvd through a regular cdr. the finished product did not have to be as perfect as a dvd with menus and chapters, just a playable movie on a disc. but it seems my question was answered and thanks for the great suggestions. and i hope your other nut works good if you plan on having kids buddy.

ugh. he wasn't wrong lee. you still can't burn a full length dvd onto a cd... 18 minutes does not count. the full length movie you will burn is known as a VCD and has been around for a helluva long time, it is not a DVD. But it is a full movie that will play in a DVD player.

[quote]I'd give my left nut if you can send me a CD that will function in my DVD Player.<hr></blockquote>Both music CDs and VCDs will function in DVD players. He didn't specify quality of the video at all. So ugh back to you.

I know I didn't specify QUALITY at first but I did later. Oh and BTW I've already got a kid

I know perfectly well that VCD's and CD's and the like will function in a DVD player as I have done so myself before but the fact remains that the original question was about burning DVD to CD-R and it is not possible to burn the DVD format to a DVD. I was responding the way I read the question.

    God, read the links!

You are wrong, you can burn DVD format onto a CDR or CDRW but it doesn't have the capacity of a DVD. So you get about 18minutes with all the featurers of DVD. Not all players will play these but quite a few will.
