What's this about iDock?!?

Today's ATAT provides a link to this on scripting.com:

Talking on the phone with Dave Jacobs, I asked if he has a clue what Apple's going to announce on the 7th. "I don't really know," he says, "but I've heard about the iDock, which is a flat-screen on an 802.11a network that moves your desktop anywhere you want to work in the home." A very thin computer, just a keyboard and screen (maybe just a screen and a pen) and relatively inexpensive. Sweet!Â*

Anyone got a clue who Dave Jacobs is, what the deal is with scripting.com (<a href="http://scriptingnews.userland.com/backissues/2002/01/02#l302a90cebae30a5c7a9cfc5efbaf7df9"; target="_blank">here is the exact link</a>), how reliable it is, and any other info. the real AI insiders may have?

Thx.

Yeah, I've heard about 2.6 GHz G5s too, but that doesn't mean they're showing up.

So you buy a Powerbook, or even a Powermac, and then purchase the iDock to use as a full sized display and keyboard. Nice. I would want one if it were priced right.

But coming from Apple, we know that it will be overpriced. For example, a 17" display is 999? A keyboard is 60, and a mouse is 60, and airport is 100.

so they would price a 17" iDock at $1500. $1200 for the 15" display version. Nobody would buy it, ROTFLMAO!!

Since Billy G is hyping something VERY similar the very next day CES, maybe that's why Steve moved up the keynote, so that he could be first, thus satisfying the prediction of going where no PC has gone before......at least for 24 hours, anyway.

[quote]And what is Bill expected to show? The Viewsonic AirPanel 150, a flat-screen wireless monitor that pops out of a docking station and allows users to carry it around. It works a little like a tablet PC, in the sense that users will apparently be able to use the detached panel with some sort of input system as a wireless "thin client" terminal. In other words, if you get sick of working at your desk, you could grab your screen and a stylus, carry it into the living room, plop down on the couch, and keep right on working wirelessly. Yes, you could also do this with a laptop, but that's so '90s. Get with the times.

What's particularly intriguing about this development is the fact that Apple has long been rumored to have a similar technology in the works, and you may recall whispers of an LCD iMac whose screen was actually a removable thin-client webpad thingy. Most recently, faithful viewer Greg Hill informed us that a mention of this sort of product just showed up at Dave Winer's Scripting.com: "I've heard about the iDock, which is a flat-screen on an 802.11a network that moves your desktop anywhere you want to work in the home." In other words, it's the AirPanel 150, only Apple's version.<hr></blockquote>

    From AtAT turns.

I don't subscribe to WindowsInsider or whatever, so I can't verify that this Viewsonic procuct is coming, but if it is, then Steve-o is:

    a) beat MS to the punch. Which is always fun, and fulfills the taglines of the past few days at apple.com

    b) gonna have to announce a mess o' harware for this to work. Gigawire, docking stations, tablest, pens, wireless this that and the other oh my!

    All in all, very interesting.

Except no one is talking about 17" or 15"...most tablet devices are in the 12" for display. Nice try troll. Please play again.

Anyone else think 15"-17" is way too big for a tablet like this? I've always said that I think a "thin client tablet," since that's basically what we're talking about, should be a separate product to be placed at a "station" or dock away from your main desktop (use it like a terminal to your computer from around the house). I love a 17" screen in front of me, but I can't imagine working with anything too much bigger than an iBook screen on my lap while I'm trying to relax or accomplish something (I'm assuming that if I am using this thing I'm trying to accomplish something OTHER than being on the computer - otherwise I'd just be on the computer).

The more I think about it, the more I like it. It fits in with the trademark application of Gigawire stuff.

It also is new, and exciting, and would have a chance at being done better by Apple than by random wintel software and hardware vendors.

So, I'm adding iDock to the list of official predictions.

So what exactly is the iDock? From reading the above quote is sounds like it is basically a portable monitor in which you can carry around the house, correct? If Apple did come out with something like this, oculd you say that it would be "To Boldly go where no PC has ever gone before?"

A portable desktop that is not a notebook. Very interesting.

This "iDock" is not a tablet. As described, it's a portable docking station for laptop, or maybe a powermac. Keyboard and display are portable, and the computer acts as a basestation.

If it is going to serve as a portable desktop, then 12" would be an awfully small display. The name idock implies that it's a docking station for something, probably a laptop. What would the point be in docking a laptop with a 12" display--a display smaller than or the same size as any Apple laptop? Furthermore--what is the advantage of a 12" display docking station over a laptop? I'd rather have a laptop, personally, and carry that around the house.

I see the iDock more as a portable display for a desktop Mac. Apple has taken the final step and removed all wires between the display and the computer. If this is right, then the iDock display would serve as one's primary display, and thus it would need to be large, on the order of 15-17 inches.

Or, it could be a secondary display.

Or it could be primary display that is small like the iBook's. Face it, even a laptop computer is hardly a good user experience compared to a thin tablet and stylus. (Whether you can get more done or not is another kettle of fish.) Or even a 13.3 or 14.1.

    Your ass is talking again.

The good thing about XML is that one day, I'll never have to see a kormac post again. Just blip it right out with my own tag definitions.

Good idea. How many people are going to buy a second display for their home computer, if they can only carry it around their home? Why not just buy a laptop, and carry it all over the place?

[quote]Or it could be primary display that is small like the iBook's.<hr></blockquote>

That would be a joke. Nobody would want such a tiny display.

[quote] Face it, even a laptop computer is hardly a good user experience compared to a thin tablet and stylus. <hr></blockquote>

That's your opinion, and it's wrong. A tablet is a horrible experience, that's why they don't sell very well. In contrast, a laptop can do everything a desktop can do, it can be taken virtually anywhere, and it's about the same size as a tablet.

Trust me, if you OWNED a tablet, once the novelty of the device wore off it would sit around collecting dust.

What you can get done with it is the whole point of the matter! You are talking about a sharper image buyer's priorities here, the sort of person who buys crap to impress their friends, but doesn't actually use it. Apple learned the hard way that this market is not large enough to support even a single product.

How old are you? You're replies to my posts are generally lacking in logic, and punctuated by personal insults--a sure sign of immaturity. Is the insecurity of being wrong so intense that you must lash out with bitchy little comments like the one above?

In any event, I can assure you that Apple will not unveil a tablet at MWSF. If they do, I'll suck my own dick! That's a promise!

ummm, someone's opinion is just that, and opinion. It will always be right to that person, and never wrong.

Actually, I think both of you have very good posts, logically. In terms of insults, BOTH of you do it. like you said JD, "a sure sign of immaturity". So why don't the both of you take some good advice and stop being so viscious?

    Good argument tho
