Talking on the phone with Dave Jacobs, I asked if he has a clue what Apple's going to announce on the 7th. "I don't really know," he says, "but I've heard about the iDock, which is a flat-screen on an 802.11a network that moves your desktop anywhere you want to work in the home." A very thin computer, just a keyboard and screen (maybe just a screen and a pen) and relatively inexpensive. Sweet!Â*
Anyone got a clue who Dave Jacobs is, what the deal is with scripting.com (<a href="http://scriptingnews.userland.com/backissues/2002/01/02#l302a90cebae30a5c7a9cfc5efbaf7df9"; target="_blank">here is the exact link</a>), how reliable it is, and any other info. the real AI insiders may have?

But coming from Apple, we know that it will be overpriced. For example, a 17" display is 999? A keyboard is 60, and a mouse is 60, and airport is 100.
so they would price a 17" iDock at $1500. $1200 for the 15" display version. Nobody would buy it, ROTFLMAO!!

I don't subscribe to WindowsInsider or whatever, so I can't verify that this Viewsonic procuct is coming, but if it is, then Steve-o is:
a) beat MS to the punch. Which is always fun, and fulfills the taglines of the past few days at apple.com
b) gonna have to announce a mess o' harware for this to work. Gigawire, docking stations, tablest, pens, wireless this that and the other oh my!
All in all, very interesting.

This "iDock" is not a tablet. As described, it's a portable docking station for laptop, or maybe a powermac. Keyboard and display are portable, and the computer acts as a basestation.
If it is going to serve as a portable desktop, then 12" would be an awfully small display. The name idock implies that it's a docking station for something, probably a laptop. What would the point be in docking a laptop with a 12" display--a display smaller than or the same size as any Apple laptop? Furthermore--what is the advantage of a 12" display docking station over a laptop? I'd rather have a laptop, personally, and carry that around the house.
I see the iDock more as a portable display for a desktop Mac. Apple has taken the final step and removed all wires between the display and the computer. If this is right, then the iDock display would serve as one's primary display, and thus it would need to be large, on the order of 15-17 inches.

Or it could be primary display that is small like the iBook's. Face it, even a laptop computer is hardly a good user experience compared to a thin tablet and stylus. (Whether you can get more done or not is another kettle of fish.) Or even a 13.3 or 14.1.

Good idea. How many people are going to buy a second display for their home computer, if they can only carry it around their home? Why not just buy a laptop, and carry it all over the place?

That's your opinion, and it's wrong. A tablet is a horrible experience, that's why they don't sell very well. In contrast, a laptop can do everything a desktop can do, it can be taken virtually anywhere, and it's about the same size as a tablet.
Trust me, if you OWNED a tablet, once the novelty of the device wore off it would sit around collecting dust.

What you can get done with it is the whole point of the matter! You are talking about a sharper image buyer's priorities here, the sort of person who buys crap to impress their friends, but doesn't actually use it. Apple learned the hard way that this market is not large enough to support even a single product.

Actually, I think both of you have very good posts, logically. In terms of insults, BOTH of you do it. like you said JD, "a sure sign of immaturity". So why don't the both of you take some good advice and stop being so viscious?
