Why does it seem that whenever someone else comes up with a great idea or product, Microsoft has to come with something to compete with it? and not only that, Microsoft has to destroy their competitor?

Why does it seem like any advances in computer technology has to be associated with how much money you can make from it?

Why is $$$$ (money) ALWAYS a factor?? and a major factor at that??

Is greed good?

When will something be made or invented or created for the greater good and not make greedy people rich???

    Good inventors create

Great inventors steal...or something like that

If you want to see a good example of something close to MS philosiphy, watch the movie Wall Street, pay particular attention to Gorden Geko and his theorys on business and high finance

And oh yea, a choice quote from the movie "Greed IS GOOD" -Gordon Geko-

Greed is good as long as you control it, the minute it controls you, you are screwed.

To this point I say ba-humbug

If I put the time and effort into something, take the risk of marketing and selling it, why should I not enjoy the fruits of my labor?

Again Greed is ok and to a certin extent healthy if you can control it, MS seems to have lost control of it.

FYI There are software options for the "greater good" as you call it, it is called Linux and GNU or F/OSS in general. and money is even being made there, ask Novel, IBM, and Redhat.

If they actually competed by making and selling a better product and turning out a profit, and their competitors went out of business because of that, no problem. What they do in practice is to use their considerable financial reserves to dump the market full of free or near-free crap, one market sector at a time, to smother their competition and prevent them from building the foundation to eventually threaten the Microsoft cashcows Windows and Office. Microsoft loses, but the competitors lose more, and Microsoft can afford it since people keep paying the "Microsoft tax". Microsoft is much like a tobacco company in that the chief product they are selling is lock-in. This is insidious, but in a free world the only thing to do about it is to stop supplying the funds they need for more market disruption - to not buy their products.

You need money to be able to compare prices. Prices are a gauge of how much people appreciate the technology.

Because money means security, comfort, living where you want, eating what you want. No one cares about money in itself, only what it can get you. Duh.

All action stems from discontent. If you are content, there's no reason to do anything. It's because of those wants that we are no longer living in a cave but have cars, central heating and food on store shelves. Clearly greed (just another name for want) is good.

The will to serve a "greater good" of your choosing is just another individual want. Feel free to pursue it.

I've see a lot of big fish knowingly infringing the intellectual property of small fish, knowing full well that the small fish will probably be out of business by the time that the legal wranglings come to a close.
