Looking for digital video camera recs

Could anybody offer advice on the best "consumer" digital video camcorder? I will eventually be using the mactel version of one of the new machines. I currently use a G4 imac. My price range is around 400-800 dollars. Are the mini dvd cameras usefull. I wouldn't want to put a 3 inch dvd into a slot load dvd machine. Would this work.
