My permissions don't seem to work.

I have run the Disk Utility on tha hard drive, and read everything in the Genius Bar FAQ, but I seem to be having another type of problem.

A few months ago I copied all my stuff from my old Mac to a PC and got rid of the old Mac. I then got another Mac and copied it back. It seems like the permissions are not set up correctly.

When I try to open up some of my files and write to them, it won't let me. So I then do a Get Info on the entire folder, and I set the owner to my login name, because it might have been System, or just Unknown. The group owner says Unknown. I then click Apply to Enclosing Folder.

So you would think that would set them all to me and I could do whatever I want to, but it doesn't change the items in the folder. When I right click on one I can't change the label because it won't let me. I have to then do a Get Info on the individual file, choose my name as owner, which IS there correctly, but let it go still on my name, and then it MAY let me change the label.

So the problems are the Unknown group owner, and that it won't necessarily apply my settings to everything in the subfolder, and even if it does it won't necessarily let me in. Who is supposed to own my files in my Home directory, me or System? What is the Group supposed to be?

Also, something that might be unrelated, but just a week ago some of my icons started disappearing. They are not there in the Finder next to the name of the file. I don't want the whole systems to crash. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

The stuff that I can't access properly is not in my Home directory. But I do seem to have problems with my Home directory.

    For example I have:

    drwxr-xr-x 7 pricklyp admin 238 27 Feb 19:12 Documents

I have drwxr-xr-x for a lot of things in my Home directory that you have drwx------

But still, it seems like if I take a folder, and use Get Info to set the Owner to my login name, and set my access to Read and Write, and then click Apply To Enclosed Items, they should all then be mine. And if they are mine, I should be able to change the label color when I click Get Info. Is there something higher in the folder structure that can stop this?
