Lock ups

I have been having lock ups on my new Intel iMac--



My software and my permissions are up to date.



It locks up when I try to get mail and when I start to use office.

    I think I may have figured it out--in preferences/energy saver--there is a switch for letting the hard drive sleep whenever possible.



    In my case the box was checked---I checked it.
