What are you encoding your songs at, how long are they?

In order for your 1 Gb Shuffle to muster 240 songs they most be encoded using 128 kbit AAC and be an average of 3 minutes long. Anything higher or longer than that means your Shuffle will swallow fewer tunes.

    I think it's 4 minutes, not 3.

    Correct.

Music capacity is based on 4 minutes per song and 128Kbps AAC encoding.

well id say average is about 4-5 minutes and they are all 128 MP3...its suprising because normally ive been able to fit more then they say. for example on my old 4 gb mini i was able to fit almost 1100 songs well beyond there cliam of 1000.

Looking at the number of songs is pretty misleading. One audiobook, for example, will kill it. Instead, look at how much space is used/available on the ipod. Could she have some space separated out into "hard drive" space, thus reducing the space available for music?
