Can anybody recommend any free or open source universal binary programs to view video files (AVI, MPG). I'm running the PowerPC version of MPlayer, which works well enough except that it doesn't work in full screen mode.

Your best bet is VLC, more info can be found at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ There is a PowerPC and Intel specific versions so make sure you download the correct one.
Actually, the player that will play almost *all* formats (including the infamous WMV3) is MPlayer (Movie Player for Linux). It has been ported to run on OS X and is, as far as I know, Intel native.
MPlayer is not the same as MPlayerOSX, which was an independent port of MPlayer (the original) to OS X and is now defunct.
One can download a preview release of MPlayer from here:

VLC has separate builds for powerpc and intel, but it seems to work well enough.
