How to convert DVD to my iPod

I heard some software is inexpensive even free to convert video files to iPod. But what I know....a bit dear. I googled one or two free tool, but the picture quality was not good enough. Who can help me to find one with low cost or even for free, while the quality is OK??? Thanks.

    I'm quite new to this Mac business, but I did briefly read up on this process today. I cannot, however, vouche that it works the way you wish as I haven't yet tried it.

    Instant Handbrake is set up specifically to rip DVDs to iPod format. Very slick and easy.
