recordable DVDs: what format to buy, what is a good deal

I know nothing of the world of recordable DVDs, so I need you guys to help me, if you can. I'm basically looking for two things:



1) Bang for your buck (price per disc)

2) Compatibility (what is the most compatible recordable DVD format?)



If anyone here can help me I will be extremely greatful.
