I think it means that the Core2 Duo MacBook Pro has the chance of being announced before the Paris Expo. AppleInsider wrote a vague report about something for September 5th. That happens to be a Tuesday. Also if you have been following the Rongold topic about the "surefire indicator" that Apple is coming out with new hardware, Apple has ramped out a slew of software updates. According to his (now mostly proven) theory, batches of software updates preceed a hardware update of some sort.
The fact that there is no Keynote does almost nothing to the MBP's fate. Think about it, is a Keynote really needed for a relatively minor upgrade? A totally redesigned MBP would be another story, but that's not as expected. It's also likely that the MBP will be upgraded before the Expo but really, who knows?
I think no-keynote is sort of a positive; last year, IIRC, wasn't Steve's special event in CA on September 7th? If there were to be a similar time-frame here, it wouldn't make sense to have a keynote a week after having a special event. Of course, a new MBP doesn't necessarily have to have a special event, a la MB.
Something's coming soon...the Mac Mini 1.5 Core Solo model, the 1.83 iMac, and the 2.0 iMac, all have an estimated shipping time of 2-3 weeks at the online Apple Store for Education.
We are going to see a lot of refreshes very soon. Mac Mini, iMac, MBP. A MB refresh is unlikely but you never know with Apple. Definitley a MBP change, its been half a year with no MAJOR updates.

Even the standard option iMac (both sizes) ship time has changed from 24 hours to 1-2 business days in the regular Apple Online Store. Something is coming on the horizon very soon.
Paris is not that important, so Steve not doing a keynote is not unexpected. He didn't in the two years either. What does this mean in terms of products being announced there? Not a whole lot. Does anyone remember the last time Apple actually announced a product at an oversees expo?
Also consider the "no keynote" only because it's France and France hasn't been too kind to Apple lately. It could be Steve's way of stickin' it to the French.
