Might Dell be committing a terrible strategic error by going the AMD route now that Intel is in the catbird's seat of processor superiority? (Directed to link via article on digg.com)

...or is Dell's buying audience only interested in cheap, cheaper, cheapest.

Well -- to be fair, in once sense, it is smart. Becauase when you compare Apple laptops and Dell laptops, when they both use Intel Core Duo, it's easy to see that Apple has the advantage. But that's just a theory.

Another thing is -- they aren't going all AMD are they? I mean -- giving the customer an option isnt ness a bad thing............

I think this is recognision that AMD is going to be a competitve player for the long term. Yes Intel have technical superiority now but that may not last. With AMDs purchase of ATI they'll be able to produce chipsets in the future making them even more competitve with Intel. In the future Dell can go either way depending upon who offers the best chips. Much like what HP have been doing the past couple of years and they have eaten into Dell's business. I wonder if and or when Apple will move to such a strategy. History has shown that it may not be wise to have all your eggs in one basket when it comes to chip suppliers.
