'micorprocessor and pen input device can be put into the monitor to make it portable' WTF?

That's a small processor or a wierd design. Does the processor sit in it's own housing that can be removed and inserted without being exposed?

Also, who is this guy? Is he with Apple?

Remember, patents are awarded to individuals and not companies.

Here's another patent: this time apple owns it:

    Apple's flatpanel patent

IT doesn't matter, as It specifically states that the technology is intended to be used with x86 hardware.
  • Reply 14 of 24
Ok, I read the second link, and now I see that it is intended for apple hardware (this one), but it was patented in 1997. This is a long time ago.
  • Reply 15 of 24
but on that link there was also a more recent date. Dont ask me why but (and yes I know this was like 9months ago but...) the date April 10 2001 is stamped on it

I also remembered when I had done a search through the trademarks a while back and most of them were old with no updates in about a year except save gigawire. Well today since I was looking through the patents I happened over to the trademarks and searched under "Apple Computer." Of course it returns back quite a bit but the ones that interested me were:

iPicture: which was last modified 7-01

AirMac: 8-01 therefore most likely not AirPort

    and

iServices, updated just 3 days ago 1-03-02

    Just something to chew on

Here are the drawings of what the Applicant is envisioning...

    Page 1 of Images

    Page 2 of images

    (Page 3 was boring)

Page 4 of images (looks like it's not a Mac)

Page 5 of images (interesting Pivot notion)

The display Panels mentioned in the Specifications section run at 640x480, hardly OS X territory. The reason a search for Apple Computer brought this up is there is a passing reference to the Newton in [0036]

Let me quote from the Application to emphasize this is not a future Mac:

[0032] FIG. 4 shows a general flow diagram of typical stored program software that may execute in the microcomputer or processor 44. Many commercial available operating systems, window environment and application software are available to run in the microcomputer. Typical operating systems that could be used include Microsoft Corporation's MS-DOS.TM., IBM's OS/2.TM., Go Corporation's Pen Point or various companies' UNIX products. Possible windowing environments include Microsoft's Windows.TM. 3.x and Windows for Pen.TM., Hewlett-Packard's New Wave.TM., or X-Windows from various companies. Software may be pen centric like Pen PointTM software or it may be just pen/mouse aware. As shown in FIG. 4, after a standard power up and the system diagnostics and checkout is completed the operating system is loaded. Depending on the desired configuration a number of device driver, TSR's, communication programs and pen/stylus control programs may be loaded. The workstation should be capable of either running windows or non-windows environments.

640x480 could work with all OS X stuff set to the smallest size, right?

The thing about Quartz is that it's scalable.

Big stuff for 24" LCDs and small stuff for 640x480

Pretty ingenius of them to design it that way.

Talk about scalable arcitecture - what about a scalable interface.

    =)

plus - 640x480 might make it more affordable.

    although 800x600 might be nice

and also - what if there are different sizes?

I remember some rumor mentioning multiple sizes for these things.

Maybe they'll start out small and get large enough as prices/demand allows (up to the "that's way too big too carry" size of course)

Apple is bringin back the luggable, yo!

"said passive base unit is relatively small and adapted to be placed on the a desk or table-like structure, but said base unit does not contain electronic components and is not normally intended to be clamped to a desk or table-like structure. "

So it's pretty much a detachable version of the old 15" Apple LCD.

    Interesting . . .

    This is getting fun

Remember the removeable harddrive which makes the screen mobile? I just found this which is apparently old but still might shed some light visually-
