Problems with HD footage on 20" intel iMac

Hi all, my 20" intel iMac with 1gb ram really struggles to play 720p stuff, specifically Prison Break downloads in .avi format. They open in Real Player and the machine drops more frames than it plays. I'd really appreciate any help with this as I was certain the machine would be powerful enough.
