Illustrator Modifier keys not working!!

I just installed Adobe Illustrator 10 for Mac OSX and have now discovered that my keyboard modifier keys aren't working - for example if I want to constrain the rectangle tool to a perfect square by holding down the shift key!! What gives? Any clues - this is annoying the heck out of me!! :confused:



Using Mac OSX 10.2 btw - the full purchased version!
